Saksun You leave Tórshavn and head in a northerly direction along the eastern side of the island, following the long and narrow sound separating Streymoy and Eysturoy, the second largest of the islands. After travelling through the village of Hosvik, you continue past the old whaling station to Hvalvik, also known as Whale Bay. Here you join a side road leading north-westwards through a seven-mile-long valley to Saksun, the northernmost village on the western side of Streymoy. Saksun is one of the most idyllic settings in the Faroes, with its small cove and deep-sloping grassy banks almost completely enclosed by the surrounding mountains. A narrow, curving inlet is the only indication that the great swell of the Atlantic is just beyond, and oyster catchers, the national bird of the Faroes, abound along a shallow stream and trout lurk in the shadowy pools. Of special interest is the old turf-roofed farm house, Duvugardar. Now a museum, it is a well-preserved and typical example of a Faroese farmhouse of any period from medieval times to the end of the 19th century. On display here are many interesting old domestic utensils and household objects and furniture, which displayed in their original context help to give an excellent impression of traditional life in the Faroes. The local people have managed to retain many of the characteristics and values of the old-established life of subsistence farming, fishing and hunting. It is this very combination of the traditional and modern life-styles, together with the strikingly beautiful natural surroundings, which make a visit to Saksun such a memorable experience. Following the visit, we drive over one of only two bridges across the Atlantic to the island of Eysturoy, where coffee will be served at Eydnan House in the village of Oyrarbakki. Afterwards the scenic drive continues, passing the pretty waterfall Fossa on the far side of the fjord, before arriving at the attractive village of Ljosa, where we turn round for our return journey southwards along the mountain road, stopping at a viewpoint overlooking Tórshavn before arriving back at the quayside. By coach, subject to a minimum of 40/maximum of 180. Please note: This tour may operate in a different order so as to avoid congestion.. |
