Kvivik and Kollafjoerdur We join our coach at the quayside near to Tinganes, site of ancient Viking council meetings, and leave the bustling city of Tórshavn, heading in a northerly direction alongside the Kaldbak fjord and catching glimpses en route of cascading waterfalls. After travelling through a tunnel, we emerge to discover a delightful fjord and a series of salmon lakes, before continuing to the picturesque village of Leynar, set amidst some of the most splendid scenery in the Faroes. Our first stop is at Kvivik, situated in a beautiful broad valley, running from high mountains down to the sea, where we shall explore the remains of a well-preserved Viking farmstead dating from the 10th century. Traditional stone fences still mark the boundary between infield pastures and the wild reaches of the mountains above, and an attractive stream runs through the middle of the village. After a photo stop at a viewpoint overlooking Kvivik, we continue to Kollafjoerdur, one of the largest villages in the Faroes, with its houses stretching for kilometres along the shoreline. It takes its name from the wide fjord surrounded by high mountains, and one of them is the majestic Skaelingsfjall, once considered to be the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands. We take a step back in time with a visit to an old Lutheran church built in 1837 and still in use, constructed in typical Faroese style with a stone foundation painted white, and a black-tarred wood siding and turf roof. Our return to Tórshavn is via the mountain road, which affords spectacular views of fjords and distant islands. By coach, subject to a minimum of 40/maximum of 180.
