The world-famous Geysir
geothermal field is
highlighted on this tour,
where spouting springs of
various formations and
appearances are seen. Nearby
is Gullfoss, the queen of
Icelandic waterfalls, and we
are given the opportunity to
stand next to it, watching as
enormous quantities of water
tumble violently into a deep,
meandering gorge. The Geysir
museum is included as a main
feature of this tour, an
informative multimedia
exhibition that vividly shows
how the forces of nature
shaped the country and the
people. An excellent choice
for those with limited time in
Iceland. |
Departing by coach from
Reykjavík for an easy walk on
the Sólheimajökull Glacier.
From Mýrdalsjökull ice cap,
the Sólheimajökull glacier
tongue extends down to the
lowlands and is an impressive
ice field of solid blue ice
with crusty whitish surface.
With crampons on our feet we
take an easy walk up on the
ice field, where a wonderland
of ice sculptures, ridges and
deep crevasses awaits
discovery. We will teach you
how to use basic glacier
equipment, however this tour
is not recommended for
children. |
Our destination is the Westman
Islands, a natural geological
hot spot. We begin our tour at
the airport and learn about
the 1973 volcanic eruption
that devastated the community
even as it improved the
harbor. Buried houses are
still to be seen along the
edge of the lava flow, and
we'll feel the heat of the
earth for ourselves. After a
break for lunch, we'll board a
boat (optional) for a tour of
this remarkable archipelago.
Iceland boasts the world's
largest puffin population, the
delightful little bird abounds
here during summer, providing
exciting photo opportunities!
