A new tour through the wonderland of Iceland's
north! This tour can be combined with
Glaciers, Geysers and Waterfalls. Day 1: Arrival Early morning arrival at Keflavik airport in Iceland, transfer via the Flybus to your accommodation in Reykjavík for one night. Day 2: Reykjavík - Borgarfjörður - Skagafjörður - Akureyri Departure from Reykjavík through Hvalfjörður tunnel through the fertile Borgarfjörður region. Visit Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring and the spectacular waterfalls Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. We continue our journey to the north of Iceland. Driving through the rolling farmlands of Húnavatnssýslur we stop at the farm and horse breeding center of Gauksmýri for an introduction of the Icelandic horse and it's special qualities such as the famous five gaits. We continue to the beautiful Skagafjörður district which played a large role in the tumultous 13th century history of Iceland. Onwards to Akureyri, the capital of the north, located just 60 km below the Arctic Circle. Overnight in Akureyri. Day 3: Húsavík - Ásbyrgi - Dettifoss - Mývatn Drive to the fishing village of Húsavík where you have the option of going on a memorable whale watching tour, where minke whales are frequently seen. Continue to Ásbyrgi, "Fortress of the gods", a horseshoe-shaped canyon, formed as the result of a catastrophic flood. Drive onwards to Dettifoss, Europe´s most powerful waterfall. It´s 44m high and 100m wide, where up to 1500 tons of water, mud and sand rumble into Jökulsárgljúfur, the greatest and the most spectacular canyon in the country. Drive onwards to the beauty of Lake Mývatn, Drive onwards to Lake Mývatn, known for its beauty and geological wonders. Overnight in Mývatn area. Day 4: Mývatn Explore the natural wonders of the unique Lake Mývatn area, which has been sculpted by volcanic eruptions through the ages. Lake Mývatn is one of the largest lakes in Iceland and renowned for its rich birdlife. It is thought to nest more species of duck than any other place in Iceland or in the world. We visit the boiling solfatara pits at Hverarönd by Námafjall. View of Hverfjall, one of the most striking and regular formations of explosive craters in Iceland and one of the earth's largest. We take a look at the underground bathing springs Grjótagjá cave, formerly the public bath of the area. On to Dimmuborgir "The Dark castles", a true labyrinth of lava formation. Top the day off with a relaxing bath in the Mývatn's nature baths. Overnight in Mývatn area. Day 5: Mývatn - Akureyri Drive from Mývatn to the impressive Goðafoss waterfall. Stop at Laufás Folk Museum before returning to the town of Akureyri for a visit of the city. We learn the history of Akureyri, visit the modern church, the botanical garden and the Listagil street with its many artists' ateliers. Flight back to Reykjavík. Overnight stay in Reykjavík. Day 6: Departure Take a morning walk and say farewell to Iceland. After breakfast check out of your accommodation and have your baggage ready to transfer. Visit the Blue Lagoon en route to Keflavik airport. A perfect solution for what to do on your last day in Reykjavik and a great way to go home feeling relaxed and revitalized! With your baggage safely stored on the coach enjoy a soak in the lagoon or treat yourself to a massage. Transfer from the lagoon to the airport and return home on an Icelandair flight. |
