HI
Iceland is a non-profit membership organization
established in 1939. The organization is a member of
Hostelling International, a worldwide network of over
4000 hostels in 80 countries with app. 35 million
overnights a year worldwide. Membership
means that the Icelandic hostels fulfill the international
standard for HI hostels.
Since
its inception the organization's main goal has been to
promote and encourage travel with people of all ages,
increasing their knowledge and appreciation of nature
and culture.

Árnes
Árnes is conveniently located close
to all major tourist attractions in the
South of Iceland, app. 90 km from Reykjavík.
Next door to the hostel is a swimming
pool with a hot pot and a licensed
restaurant. In the area there are good hiking
trails and a landscape
of sharp contrasts such as flourishing birch
woods, sandy lava fields, rivers and
waterfalls. Gjáin is a stunning ravine with
lush vegetation, numerous springs, bizarre
rock formations and a picturesque little
waterfall. A flourishing farming
community lived there until the valley was swamped by
ash from an eruption from Mt. Hekla in 1104.
One of the ruined farms, Stöng, has been
excavated and served as the model for the
nearby Saga-Age farm reconstruction.

Fljótsdalur
Visitors
traveling in Iceland will enjoy staying at
Fljótsdalur Hostel for it is a traditional
Icelandic house with turf walls. From the
house, the view of the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull
and Mýrdalsjökull is splendid. Compared to
modern standards the Hostel is rather small
and primitive. The Hostel is 27 km away from
the bus stop and guests are advised to bring
food as the nearest store is also 27 km away
at Hvolsvöllur. At the Hostel there is
a good collection of English publications on
Iceland. The surrounding area is ideal for
hikers, Tindafjallajökull glacier, Þórólfsfell
mountain, Einhyrningsflatir plain, and
Markarfljót canyon are all nearby. We can
recommend independent walks
from the Hostel.

Hvolsvöllur
Hvolsvöllur
is a village on the south coast of Iceland.
The accommodation is in an old renovated
school. In the schoolhouse
there is a guest kitchen
and a living room. The hostel is on the outskirts
of the village but close to all services. In
the area around Hvolsvöllur many of the
most dramatic Icelandic sagas took place.
Therefore it is a must to visit The Saga
Center which is located in the middle of the
village. In good weather there is a great
view over the mountains and glaciers on the
south coast. There is a great variety
of things to do in Hvolsvöllur. The area
around the village is ideal for hiking and
in the village's
centre you will find museums and a swimming
pool. Nearby is a golf course and
possibilities to go horse riding

Laugarvatn
Laugarvatn
is a village with 300 inhabitants and is
located midway between Þingvellir, Gullfoss
and Geysir, 100 km from Reykjavík. Just
outside the Hostel there is a hot tub
available for the guests. Within a 500
meters walking distance from the Hostel you
will find the only natural sauna in Iceland,
along with an outdoor swimming pool, post
office, bank, a grocery shop and a
restaurant. There are possibilities to hire
a boat or a sailboard to use at lake
Laugarvatn. Nearby you will find a lot of
marked hiking routes. Just outside
Laugarvatn there is a golf course and the
possibilities of angling in waters and
rivers in the area. The hostel has a 4x4
wheel Econoliner to take tourists on trips.

Njarðvík
The
Hostel has recently been completely
renovated. It is
often called "the Hostel by the airport
". Njarðvík and the area around has
much more to offer than easy access to the
airport. A few examples of activities you
can find are fishing, sea angling, whale
watching, golf courses and for the ones who
wish to visit museums you can find the marine
wildlife centre and a trout and salmon
museum. For birdwatchers the area offers
several locations to rival the best, among
them are Hafnarberg, Garðskagi, Reykjanestá
og Krísuvíkurbjarg. And last but not
least, only 15 minutes from the hostel you
will find The Blue
Lagoon, one of Iceland's
most popular tourist attractions.

Skógar
The Hostel by Skógar is situated in the old
school, close to Skógafoss, one of the best
known waterfalls in Iceland. Skógar is a
popular place surrounded by a varied
landscape; glaciers, mountains, black
beaches, green acres, forest, waterfalls and
hiking routes. Skógar local museum, is one
of the most frequently visited of its kind
in Iceland. The hostel is a great stopover
for those who are hiking over
Fimmvörðuháls, which is one of the most
popular routes in the country. Skógar is
situated in the middle of south Iceland and
is ideal for those who want to explore the
south part of the country. Please note that
the nearest store is 15 km away.

Reykjavík
City Hostel
The Hostel is neatly located in
Laugardalur, the sports and recreation area
in the city of Reykjavík. Just next door
you can find one of the great geothermal
swimming pools in the city. City centre by
public bus takes 10 min. The Hostel is
favoured by all travelers who seek
affordable quality. The rooms are new and
comfortable 2-6 bedded rooms, all 2 and 4
bedded rooms have private facilities. The
reception operates a travel agency, offering
passes, bikes, rental cars and the most
exciting day tours, all with a free pick-up
service. There is free WIFI and computers
for Internet use. Check out our recreation
program during summer months. The Hostel
Team's aim is to contribute towards a style
of traveling that increases people's
knowledge of their environment, concern for
nature and respect for the cultural values
of cities and towns in all parts of the
world. The Hostel is a certified Swan Eco-labeled
Hostel and has been awarded with the HI

Vestmannaeyjar
The Westman Islands is a group
of 15-18 islands. The biggest one is Heimaey
which is the only one inhabited. The islanders have
their own traditional culture, like bird
hunting, egg collecting and cliff
rappelling. In January 1973 there was an
eruption in Heimaey. The ash ruined and
buried almost 400 buildings. The remains of
the eruption are among the island's most
fascinating historical locales. A project called the Pompeii
in the North has started, about saving the remains of the
eruption and making them more accessible; excavating 7-10 houses. There are
many activities in Heimaey; sailing, bird watching, golf, hiking,
horseback riding, museums, swimming, whale
watching etc. There are daily flights to
Vestmannaeyjar (from Reykjavík (app.
25 minutes) and a ferry which runs scheduled
trips daily between Þorlákshöfn and
Westman Islands (app. 2 hours, 45 minutes). The
hostel is located in the town centre and all
services are close by. Reception is located
in Hotel Thorshamar next door,
and is open 24 hrs.

Vík
The
hostel is located in Vík, a small village
with app. 300 inhabitants. From the hostel
you have a very good view over the village.
In the hostel you will find a member kitchen
and a dining room, All services are close
by. Dyrhólaey is only 15 km from the
Hostel. Vík has beautiful nature and the
area around the hostel is ideal for hiking.
Museums and golf courses are close by.
