HI
Iceland is a non-profit membership organization
established in 1939. The organization is a member of
Hostelling International, a worldwide network of over
4000 hostels in 80 countries with app. 35 million
overnights a year worldwide. Membership
means that the Icelandic hostels fulfill the international
standard for HI hostels.
Since
its inception the organization's main goal has been to
promote and encourage travel with people of all ages,
increasing their knowledge and appreciation of nature
and culture.

Berunes
Berunes is a charming farmhouse, ideally situated at an amazing seafront under eastern
mountains. Built at the beginning of last
century the hostel offers needed double and family rooms. There are
also 3 self-catering cottages, each of them can take up to 6 people. The Hostel
is centrally located for those who are traveling between north and south;
between Skaftafell National Park and the Myvatn area. You find a small
international library with books left by our guests throughout the
past 30 years. You can get breakfast and simple
meals typical of Icelandic cuisine in Gestastofan; a restaurant next to
the Hostel. The East Fjord mountains, valleys and coastline are excellent for
hiking. There is a path leading up between the peaks above the Hostel and down
into a valley. The hosts of Berunes welcome all their guests to observe general farm life.

Húsey
The
house is a pleasant old farmhouse which has
been rebuilt into a Hostel. The area around
Húsey is very spectacular and a
"paradise" for nature lovers. It
is a breeding ground for more than 30
different kinds of birds.
Several hundred seals swim up the glacial
river Jökulsá and you can get very close
to them. At Húsey guests can experience the
nature more intensively than in most other
places. The Hostel offers what they call
"Vacation with the Icelandic
Horse." Each guest has his/her own
horse for up to one week
and they have the opportunity to go on long
and short riding tours whenever they like.
The guests also have the opportunity to join
the life and work on the farm, including
checking the farmer's trout nets. In this
week beginners have an excellent chance to
get acquainted with the Icelandic horse.

Höfn
With
the sea on three sides and Vatnajökull, the
biggest glacier in Europe, to the northwest,
Höfn is a breathtakingly lovely town with
1500 inhabitants. The town is a bustling
fishing and fish processing port as well as
a commercial centre, with considerable
farming in the neighbouring areas. The
Hostel is to be found in the city centre and
all necessary services are close by. The
location of Höfn allows you to choose from
an unusual variety of activities. Boat
tours, glacier tours on jeeps or
snowmobiles, riding tours, jeeps and hiking in
Lónsöræfi.

Borgarfjörður
Eystri
The Hostel in Borgarfjörður Eystri is situated
in the small town Bakkagerði, with app. 150
inhabitants. Borgarfjörður has an
extremely beautiful surrounding area and
majestic mountains. Bakkagerði offers
services like a grocery shop, gas station, restaurant
and a post office. In the area there are
many beautiful marked hiking routes. The alter piece
in the church at Bakkagerði is made by the
famous Icelandic painter Jóhannes S.
Kjarval. In Bakkagerði is also a museum
dedicated to his work as he spent a lot of
his time painting in Borgarfjörður Eystri.

Hvoll
The
Hostel is in a new building and is ideally
located for those who want to do hiking
tours in the National park in Skaftafell,
visit Jökulsárlón, go to Laka or
Landmannalaugur. In the surroundings of the
hostel you can find many species of birds
and hiking trails. The guest kitchen at the
hostel is very well equipped.

Vagnsstaðir
The house is in an attractive area
surrounded by a beautiful ring of mountains.
Hiking paths invite one into the
surrounding area, using a hiking map, you
get at the Hostel. The shore only 1500 m
away, displays extensive bird life, as well
as seals on the beach frequently, and
occasionally whales in the sea.

Seyðisfjörður
Seyðisfjörður
is a town by a fjord of the same name
surrounded by high, majestic mountains. The
town is charming and friendly, and is known
for its many old wooden houses. Today Seyðisfjörður
is known to travelers as the arrival and
departure point of the MS Norröna ferry
which sails between Iceland, Denmark, Norway
and the Faroe Islands in the summertime. The
Hostel is in a newly renovated house near
the harbour. All the rooms have a sink. Seyðisfjörður
offers the RARIK electricity museum, the
technological museum, fishing permits, sea
angling, marked hiking trails to Loðmundarfjörður
and Skálanes. For those interested in
culture, there are a lot of concerts,
exhibitions and other cultural activities in
Seyðisfjörður during the summer.
