This is the perfect itinerary for those
wishing to fully explore the country
with the comfort and convenience of a fully
escorted coach tour. It is operated with a
small group, and each day consists of coach
travel, with stops and short walks to places
of interest.
Visit 5 of Iceland's most impressive
waterfalls - the "Golden Falls" of
Gulfoss;
thunderous Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful;
charming Hraunfossar, the "Lava Falls";
Skogafoss, which often has a rainbow in its
spray and last, but not least, Seljalandfoss -
for the more sure-footed, a walk behind this
is quite amazing. Then there is the volcanic
wonderland of Lake Myvatn in the north, where
you can stroll among majestic lava pillars,
craters, bubbling mud pools and steam vents as
well as see abundant birdlife. In the south,
see a dozen or more glaciers spilling off the
mighty icecaps and gaze at the splendour of
aquamarine icebergs adrift in the Jokulsarlon
glacial lagoon. The east of the island brings
further surprises, tranquil fjords, towering
glaciated mountains and delightful fishing
villages. While in the west, explore a
stunning coast of basalt cliffs at the foot of
an ancient snow-capped volcano. Along the way,
dip into the island's fascinating Saga sites.
Day 1: Arrival
Arrive at Keflavik
airport and transfer to
Reykjavik
with a full
day to explore the city.
Day 2: Thingvellir - Hraunfossar -
Borgranes
The tour will depart from
Reykjavik this morning and, following a tour
of the capital, head to Thingvellir, the site
of Iceland's ancient assembly. See fascinating
geological features, then continue on the
mountain route past the icecaps to Hraunfossar
and Iceland's largest hot springs. Two nights
are planned at a hotel in the Snaefellsness/Borgarnes
area.
Day 3: Snaefellsnes
Explore the natural beauty of the Snaefellsnes
peninsula including the Eldborg crater, the
columnar basalt cliffs of Arnarstapi and the
mysterious cone-shaped volcano and glacier
which give the peninsula its name.
Day 4: Akureyri - Godsfoos -
Husavik A remarkable day as the
journey takes you through the demanding
countryside of the north, through high passes,
to the acclaimed Lake Myvatn region with a
visit to the turf farmhouse museum at
Glaumbaer, and the delightful fjord town of
Akureyri. Stop at the beautiful "Waterfall of
the Gods" before continuing to your hotel in
Husavik area for a two night stay.
Day 5: Myvatn
The
entire day is spent enjoying the bird life and
amazing volcanic features on and around Myvatn.
Day 6: Dettifoss - East Fjords
Today includes a spectacular coastal drive
around the Tjornes Peninsula to the Jokulsa
Canyon and a visit to the awesome waterfall,
Dettifoss. Cross the highland desert to the
East Fjords region for an overnight stay.
Day 7: Vatnjokull - Hofn
Travel through spectacular fjord scenery and
fishing villages to the base of Iceland's
largest icecap, Vatnajokull, edged by many
deeply crevassed glaciers. Overnight in the
Hofn area.
Day 8: Glacial Lagoon - Skaftafell - Dyrholaey - Vik Visit the fabulous
Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon and se reflected
icebergs of all shapes and sizes, an optional
boat cruise is available during our stop here.
The journey continues through Skaftafell
National Park, viewing black sand beaches,
coastal cliffs and natural rock arch of
Dyrholaey before reaching the Vik area for an
overnight stop.
Day 9: Waterfalls - Geysir - Blue Lagoon
The final full day of the tour visits
Skogafoss, the magnificent 60 metre waterfall
which adorns many a postcard. Nearby is the
fascinating Skogar Folk Museum with its
collection of of traditional turf houses. The
next stop is Seljlalandsfoss, the stunning
waterfall with the opportunity to walk behind
its cascading curtain - waterproofs and camera
are essential! Onwards to yet another
spectacular waterfall, Gulfoss. Continue to
the Geysir geothermal area and finally, the
windswept and rugged Reykjanes Peninsula. Here
there is the option to swim in the relaxing,
therapeutic waters of the Blue Lagoon
before returning to Reykjavik for your last
night.
Day 10: Reykjavik - Departure
The final morning in Reykjavik is free to
explore and shop before the afternoon transfer
to Keflavik Airport and your return flight
home.
