Snaefellsnes Peninsula Grundarfjørdur, one of the first villages in Iceland, is situated in a fjord surrounded by imposing mountains, and the harbour is considered one of the best natural harbours in Snaefellsnes, one of the most magical and romantic places in Iceland. From Grundarfjørdur village, we head in a north-westerly direction, passing through small fishing villages towards the mystical cone-shaped volcano and ice cap Snaefellsjokull. Jules Verne chose it as the setting for his famous fictional ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’, but for centuries writers and artists have come here to seek solitude and inspiration in its peaceful surroundings. Snaefellsjokull is one of the country’s most interesting geological features, but other prominent mountains and volcanoes are to be found on this peninsula. Our first stop is at Djupalonssandur, where we take a short walk to see the shore of the Atlantic Ocean in beautiful surroundings close to the Snaefellsjokull Glacier. Many legends and sagas are connected with this area which is Iceland’s newest national park, and this helps to give it an air of mystery. After a short drive past the cliffs of Londrangar, we arrive at the tiny fishing village of Arnarstapi, where we stop for a walk among the fantastic coastal lava formations and marvel at the abundance of bird colonies in the sea cliffs. Our tour continues to Budir, well-known for its surroundings of black lava and one of the few golden sandy beaches in Iceland. Hollows and crevices in the lava shelter a wealth of ferns and wild flowers, while along the shore line many birds and sometimes seals can be seen. Travelling over Frodarheidi heath, we cross to the north-coast of the peninsula and then follow the coastal road back to Grundarfjørdur. By coach/on foot, subject to a minimum of 30. Please note: This tour involves a certain amount of walking, and is not suitable for passengers with wheelchairs or those with walking difficulties. Flat, comfortable footwear is recommended. |
